Eileen - Oh, for a while. At least a week. I've kept it in an old sour cream container for weeks, and the only detrimental effect was that it got a little crusty on top. With plastic wrap pressed directly against the surface, it would have lasted even longer.

Eileen - It's pretty easy to add lemon flavor to icing. Just replace the vanilla extract with lemon extract or lemon juice. If you want it more lemony, you can process lemon zest and sugar (granulated is what's normally used, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for powdered sugar as well) in the food processor until the zest basically disappears. Your sugar will also look a little wetter.

I plan to make the yellow and purple ladybug on http://www.wilton.com/downloads/paninstructions/2105-3316ladybug.pdf.

Have you found any good lemon buttercream recipes or is there some easy modification I can make to the buttercream recipes you posted above to make it work for a lemon flavored icing?
