Yes, i have tried this myself as i have lived in France for the past 7 years, and it is a popular dish, and an amazing one too, I live out in the countryside and when you make it yourself, and have it for dinner in the winter, its delicious!! I'd recommend it to anyone, a very good dish ^^
What i have also found to be nice is when you put very small squares of ham in with it, and that only makes it better, i'd say make the squares 1cm and sprea them out, aon some on each layer, when you serve it up, i also spread the settled cream all over it, and i've found that to work really well, mmmmm ^^

This is my favorite recipe of all time! I cut it out of Vogue magazine years ago, and I have lost it many times, but always find it somewhere in my house. I'm so glad you posted it, because I really want to make it, but my recipe is lost again!

manggy - The photos are all from the first time I made this, when I didn't overcook it. The photo of unbrowned potatoes and sauce is right after I poured the cream on, before baking. The melted floating butter is what I dotted the potatoes with after adding the cream. The second time I made the recipe, when the cream definitely separated, the whole dish was covered in a layer of unpleasant buttery grease. There's no pictures of that.

Ah, but it looks like the cream has foamed before the potatoes turned brown-- is that an unavoidable thing then?

I haven't made a gratin with the butter and cream before. But it's always a treat when I have it-- I guess I'm waiting for the right main dish to serve it with. Thanks for the recipe!
