Just wanted to say great recipe! I made some of these for a roadtrip and they were a huge hit. Bread turned out absolutely fantastic (and I have bad luck w/ yeast breads). I made mine w/ pizza filling. Thanks for posting this recipe, man.

I was going to mention Cornish pasties but Vincent beat me to it. I agree this is a great alternative to the flaky pastry, and im sure sure my husband will request these on his next fishing trip too! Thanks!

I feel validated! Some friends thought I was weird for doing this, thank you :) I've had ham and cheese last nearly a week when it wasn't too warm outside, most things last very well if you keep them salty. The insides are pasteurized as long as the crust stays sealed and doesn't get wet. I'll try your bread recipe too, I've been using something more like pizza dough. Traditional British 'pasty' dough broke open too often for me. (Have you looked up cornish pasties? Lots of good ideas for stuffing these things!)

Yum...I love pocket foods...I can never get the "bread" part right when I try it myself so I'll have to try these...I bet you could make an interesting Thanksgiving leftover version....

What a great idea! I can't say I'm much of a backpacker myself- but I can assure you that I'd love to take them on a picnic!

Jason said his mom used to make something similar using the leftover dough from pigs in the blanket. I think he said the filling she used was made with ground beef. He asked her about the filling and she doesn't remember anymore. I've been meaning to try something similar so I can freeze them for lunches but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Kristina - Pizza dough would work. It would give you a more rustic bread as opposed to this sweeter, tender sandwich bread, but there's nothing wrong with that. Depending on your pizza dough recipe, it might be difficult to roll out. You'd probably need to keep your work surface well floured and maybe flatten and stretch the dough instead of using a rolling pin.
