I tried this desert today! Thanks to your detailed instruction! I successfully made them in first time. My suggestion: If you like red beans, add some red beans to the ramekins before the cream & egg mixture.

Sam - I have a little kitchen butane torch. I don't think they're expensive, but it's definitely a unitasker. The butane torches from a hardware store are just as good and probably cheaper. (Although I bought one for my mom, and no one ever figured out how to bypass the safety mechanism. I swear we aren't usually so stupid.) I've heard you can use a propane torch too, if you're brave. :) Also, I've heard that you can do a somewhat passable job with a broiler. You can probably find good information on that with a web search.

ohmiohmy, i love creme brulee! never occurred to me that it'd be easy to make at home. but i don't have a torch... but the crunchy part on top is the best... any suggestions on how to make that happen without a torch? and if not, what kind of torch do you have?

Wha?! Dave is funny, but honestly I keep trawling strange shops for unusual dishes that look fantastic but I'd probably only use once (thankfully I'm wiser than that). I think there is a recipe for this too in Desserts by Pierre Herme. Looks so luxurious! :)
