Just pulled these out of the oven. I made 2 dozen regular and 18 mini for a bridal shower tomorrow. I think I'll be topping with a Lime Swiss Buttercream.

Amanda - To me, white cake and vanilla cake are different things. White cake has no egg yolks, so it's lighter, sweeter, and, well, whiter. Vanilla cake is richer. I love both.

You can certainly bake this as a whole cake. Just follow the baking times given in any whole cake recipe (such as those for the white cakes). Keep the same temperature recommended here.

Do you have any recommendations for baking this as a cake, rather than cupcakes? Or should I run a test of this and see what works best? Would you choose this over your white cake comparisons (since you said above that it came out very nicely as a nice, basic cake)?

Thank you for this! I love following your blog so, so much!

I always say it takes at least 3 days to make a cake unless I take a day off work. I know what you mean. These cupcakes look great!

I couldn't agree more and I like how you incorporate the vanilla beans on this, it just looks absolutely beautiful. Definitely going to give it a try, thanks for the recipe.

Steph - I actually don't put this recipe in the same category as the white cake recipes I've played around with. This one has egg yolk in it, which makes it a little richer. White cake, made with just egg whites, also has a slightly different flavor.

They're so cute and pretty! I wonder if all the vanilla flavor evaporates in the oven? I remember reading something on the Cooks Illustrated website that said vanilla flavors don't come through much in baking, but are noticeable in unbaked items like pudding where you add the vanilla after all the cooking is done.
