granola grabbers (twd)

No classic cookie recipes have been chosen for TWD since I joined. I like making cookies, so I was looking forward to Michelle’s choice for this week.

With all of the ingredients in this recipe, I thought at first that they’d be similar to Magic Cookie Bars. And then I looked closer at the recipe – 3 cups of granola and almost 3 more cups of other healthy-ish stuff compared to only 1 cup of flour. These were some sort of melding of granola bars and cookies. Hmm…that sounds…healthy.

And it tasted healthy. Too much granola! Too many raisins (any raisins in cookies is too many), too many nuts. I added 1 cup of chocolate chips to the recipe, and it was the saving grace. It also might have caused some problems – the cookies were a little crumbly, I think because there was just too many add-ins, and not enough dough to hold them together.

Dave and some other friends are going backpacking this weekend, so I baked (most of) the cookies as bar cookies, which hold up better with being squashed at the bottom of a pack. Unfortunately, in a rare move for me, I made the whole recipe. I was only able to pawn about half of that off on the backpackers, so I threw the rest in the freezer until further notice. I have a feeling they’re going to get sent to Iraq, which I feel kind of bad about, but I just don’t know what else to do with them. They’re not bad, they’re not good enough to bother eating. Plus, they’re not healthy – they just taste like it.

If you’d like to check out the recipe, Michelle has posted it.

  1. I also didn’t care for them! Good idea about adding chocolate, though!

  2. I would have LOVED to have had your extras! πŸ™‚

  3. Well they certainly look delicious! I actually really liked them!

  4. aww……not healthy but they taste like it, that’s such a funny comment! at least they were quick to make.

  5. I’m so sorry that you didn’t like these. They are a new favorite at my house.

  6. Well you sure do know how to make them look great anyway!

  7. We really liked them……….I liked all the crunchiness:-)

  8. Great idea making them into bars. Mine were crumbly too. I liked the crunchiness but I tend on the “soft batch” cookie side. Adding more butter, sugar and flour probably defeats the purpose though huh? LOL

  9. “Not good enough to bother eating” made me laugh out loud. πŸ˜‰

  10. I wonder if letting the dough sit would make them less crumbly? I think that if you microwaved the frozen ones, they’d probably hold up a bit better too. Sorry you weren’t a big fan.

  11. What about crumbling them over ice cream?

  12. At least they look great! I didn’t like mine when they came out of the oven, but the next day they were okay. I wish I added chocolate.

  13. well, your pics are great, anyway! i changed up the add ins to only use cranberries and white chocolate, which i recommend πŸ™‚

  14. Your cookies look delicious and your pics are beautiful!

  15. that too bad…i really liked them. they look really good–i’m sure whomever the recipients are, they will be very pleased!

  16. Excellent job on the photos!

  17. These cookies are definitely on the “hearty” side. I’m sorry to hear that they weren’t your cup of tea, but you’ve made them a visual treat in your photos.

  18. Your cookies look super healthy! I like the idea of making them bars–it seems to suit the “granola” theme better.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the cookies, either–too much STUFF in them. (And I even omitted the raisins!) Hopefully we’ll get to make more fun cookies soon.

  19. Yours look good. Yummy with the chocolate. Mine melted so I still haven’t tried it again as yet.

  20. Well you can most certainly send them over to me! I loved these so-called “healthy” cookies and now that I’m couch bound and looking at all these lovely pictures of cookies, I’m wishing I had some more!

  21. They look great, your pictures are really good. Sorry that they weren’t such a hit. I made bars, too and had one heck of a time controlling myself. I didn’t think they tasted very healthy, though.

  22. Skip the raisins and pass me the chocolate & M&Ms- we sure took care of killing off all the healthy at our house! πŸ™‚ Yours still look great!

  23. they look great; sorry you weren’t wow’d by them. i guess i had low expectations going in so they were exceeded. i won’t be making them every week but i thought they were good
