(chilled and therefore solid here)
One of my favorite things about the weekend is coffee. On weekdays, I limit myself to a big mug of black tea each day, maybe two mugs on Friday. But I have to be careful with caffeine, because even one mug of black tea makes me a little excited. The day I made these brownies, I had about twice my normal weekend allotment of coffee at home, and then there was some deal at the bookstore, and I ended up getting a medium instead of my normal small cappuccino. Whoa.
I came home and tried to make dinner and these brownies. Dinner wasn’t too complicated, and this dessert is just a basic brownie recipe topped with a basic chocolate chip cookie recipe. But I couldn’t focus on anything. I kept walking into the kitchen, looking around, and basically thinking, “what should I do, what should I do, what should I do?” Bzzzzzt. That was my brain. Bzzzzt.

Dinner was sort of a disaster, so I decided to placate myself by skipping right to dessert – only to find that the middle of the pan of brownies was totally raw. That just made me irritated enough to grab a spoon and go to town.
I have no one to blame but myself. I never bothered to check the doneness of the brownies at all. I didn’t pay attention to when they went into the oven, and then at some point later, it occurred to me that I should check on them. I noticed how dark the top was and assumed I’d overcooked them.

If I had bothered to read the discussion of this recipe on TWD’s site, which of course I hadn’t, I would have known that underdoneness was a common problem. To complicate matters, I made ¼ of the brownie portion and ½ of the cookie portion using a pan ¼ the size of what’s recommended for a full recipe. (Thanks to Caitlin for this advice – it was definitely closer to the ratio of brownie to cookie that I preferred.)
If this is the result, I’m really going to have to be more careful about my caffeine consumption. It’s a good thing that chocolate chip cookie dough is one of my favorite foods, because that and brownie batter is basically what this ended up as.
If you’re confident that you can actually, you know, follow a recipe, here’s this one, posted by Beth.
One year ago: Ricotta Spinach Tofu Ravioli

I had the same issue, sadly disappointing.
I also get the same way with too much caffeine. I can’t drink any coffee on an empty stomach or I’m toast for the rest of the day.
Oh no. Too bad about the raw middle. I’m a caffeine addict. I do better on it. The top and your slice in the top picture look great.
Oh, your experience sounds so familiar. Mine were pretty soft in the middle, too. Your caffeine trip made me laugh!!
Awwww, I’m sorry this didn’t work out. Reading all the other TWD’ers blogs has led me to believe this tasted pretty good, and I’m thinking on baking this next.
I’m just wondering what that yellowish looking layer between the brownie and cookie layers is? Did you add something extra, or is that a part of the recipe?
Gooey and delicious. It’s taste that counts right?
I’m thinking of starting up a blog and joining TWD, so I made these on the weekend. They worked fine for me, but only because I finally bought a proper sized pan. Learned that one the hard way, let me tell you! Even though yours didn’t turn out like the recipes, there’s never a time when cookie dough and brownie batter are a bad thing.
Avanika – I didn’t add anything extra. All I did differently was double the cookie layer and leave out the walnuts.
I’d still gladly eat it. I LOVE DOUGH TOO!
Sorry it wasn’t as good as you wanted. It’s funny what caffeine can do to you sometimes!
You may have been dissapointed with the way it turned out, but I love the last picture! I just want to stick a big spoon in that dish!
oh shoot–that’s too bad. mine we cooked thru, but not what i was hoping for either.
Chipster-Topped Brownie Pot Pie – looks sooo yummy! Even with the caffeine, it looks like it turned out well with the refrigeratored picture! And you can add it to ice cream too for your own version of cookie dough ice cream! =)
Caffeine does that to me too–people stopped letting me have it at the office hah! Mine were a little underdone, but they came to room temp before I cut them so they stayed together nicely. I actually loved it that way and it got rave reviews!!
I would have been disappointed too, I’m sorry that happened!
Well, that really stinks that it wasn’t baked all the way through. On the other hand, it’s a very pretty picture!
Aahhh! Oozy brownie-cookie batter! I bet it still tasted pretty wonderful though! And me on coffee? Veerrrry similar. My boyfriend cuts me off
You are funny! After a fast from caffiene I have that same issue only exceptionally shaky as well. Glad the batter was delicious even though they weren’t done.
Sorry about the un-doneness! I had the same problem and had to keep the brownies in the oven forever. Still, they look good.
Bummer – sorry you had problems. I had issues with mine too – the cookie dough sank into the brownie batter. Yours still look pretty terrific!
To be fair, it does look aMAZing even in its disastrousness. Maybe you should have placed it in the freezer and see if it morphs into something even more awesome
Yep!! Ditto. Baked, baked, baked, baked, ba…. Still gooey in the middle. But Good Taste.
They look good even with the gooey….
