chocolate chip bundt cake

Dave opens doors for me and buys me little surprises, but Sunday he really went all out when he offered to clean up the kitchen while I baked a cake. Then he indulged me when I brought the baked cake to him and exclaimed, “Smell this! Just like a chocolate chip cookie, right?!” over and over. And then, even though his favorite desserts are fruity and custardy and pretty much the opposite of chocolate chip bundt cake, the next day, we had this conversation over gmail chat:

David: i’m eating chocolate chip cake
me: it’s good, isn’t it?!
David: it’s good!
me: tell me some more about how awesome my cake is.
David: very moist
and delicious
me: thank you
just chocolately enough, right?
David: and the outside was powdery
me: it has a bit smaller ratio of chocolate to dough than choc chip cookies, but the few bites i’ve had have seemed good
David: and perfect balance of chocolateness
me: you’re so sweet.

Dave might have preferred Dorie Greenspan’s original fruit and nut version, posted on Peggy’s site, but the dough is so similar to chocolate chip cookie dough that I couldn’t resist adding 8 ounces of chocolate instead. I’m fairly certain I made the right choice. (I also increased the salt to 1 teaspoon.)

  5. I love the conversation with your husband. My husband loves chocolate chip cookies and this would be a winning combination for him. He liked the hazelnut version I made, plus suggested the Nutella frosting that I used, too, so he’s not complaining.

  6. What a great guy 🙂 The bundt looks awesome too.

  7. I definitely want to try your version of this–it sounds amazing!

  11. This looks so good! You can never go wrong adding chocolate chips to a dessert recipe!

  12. So just to be clear before I take this on tonight – it’s the exact same as the Dorie recipe, only sub the fruit for chocolate?

Vicki – Yes, I left out both the fruit and the nuts. Also, Dorie’s recipe has an optional substitution of some of the flour with ground nuts, and I used flour. I also increased the salt to 1 teaspoon, which is on par with most chocolate chip cookie recipes. And if you have time (I didn’t), I was thinking that a chocolate ganache glaze on top would have been perfect.

Bravo! This cake was absolutely delicious! My husband and kids went through this cake in 2 days then begged for another. I made it again yesterday and it is more than half gone already. I often change recipes also but this one stays as is. The batter is yummy too.

Thank you for posting this. I will make it again and again!

  15. Who needs fruit and nuts when you have chocolate? I <3 this cake!

  16. I think you made the right decision. I’m planning to try it myself this weekend. Thanks

  17. The cake looks gorgeous. I love when guys actually say more about a cake then ‘good’ or ‘yum’ or something equally generic. David is pretty awesome 🙂
